Internships and Job Opportunities

Samaritan Ministry regularly hosts interns. Our internships are designed as learning experiences for people new to the field. Many interns come from local universities and, depending on the academic program, may even receive credit for this work with Samaritan Ministry. Scheduling is flexible and depends on the type of work being done. Interns are accepted during fall and spring semesters, as well as the summer.

Summer Internships

In 2019, SMGW will be offering one Development & Communications Internship unpaid summer internship position in our office in Washington DC. This is an unpaid summer internship similar to our semester/year-long internship positions below and provide high school graduates, current college students, recent college graduates, and others with valuable real-world experience.

The Development and Communications Internships are 3-5 months or more with an average of 15-32 hours per week, Monday-Friday with a flexible work schedule.

Semester/Year-Long Internships

Program Associates

Program Associates are needed between 2-3 times (10-15 hours) per week in Samaritan Ministry's Northern Virginia, Southeast DC and Northwest DC offices. Morning availability is necessary, though an exact schedule would be set up with between the intern and supervisor. The start and end dates are flexible. This internship can be done in exchange for college credit or fulfillment of a course requirement, if arranged in advance and with the academic institution's approval. 

Program and Casework Interns provide invaluable support to individuals participating in Samaritan Ministry's Next Step Program by: 

  • Welcoming program participants and offering individual attention
  • Explaining the Next Step Program to new program participants
  • Sorting the mail
  • Answering the telephone and taking messages for staff and program participants
  • Helping program participants complete a Next Step Program registration form 
  • Assisting participants with computers, including training participants in areas of typing, using the Internet, creating Word documents, and setting up email accounts
  • Helping participants fill out job applications and create resumes
  • Updating the clothes closet and keeping the food pantry neat and up-to-date
  • Conducting mock interviews with participants
  • Designing and facilitating workshops
  • Creating flyers, announcements and pamphlets 
  • Working with the casework database

Skills Required: Working at Samaritan Ministry provides opportunities to interact with people who are often in need, vulnerable, and sometimes challenging in their behavior. A compassionate attitude is more important than experience or knowledge. Interns should ideally be able to demonstrate:

  • Some understanding of the issues facing our program participants, or eagerness to learn
  • Interest in human rights, poverty, and social justice
  • Good team work skills
  • Readiness to get involved in whatever needs doing
  • Ability to keep confidential information private
  • Basic computer skills
  • Enthusiasm, initiative and fresh ideas
  • Reliability and professionalism 
  • Adeptness in interview and other employment skills

Development Intern

The development/communications intern is needed each semester and must make a commitment of at least three months. For this internship Samaritan Ministry is looking for an intern or volunteer to:

  • Track and organize grant application and report deadlines
  • Research funding opportunities
  • Help with Next Step Experiences (one-hour orientation events for prospective supporters) including helping with refreshment and other set up and call/email potential attendees
  • Assist with preparing foundation application packages, including cover letters and gathering attachments
  • Work with Director of Development to draft cover letters, reports to foundations, and acknowledgement letters
  • Edit proposals, reports, and other documents
  • Perform data entry and help pull reports from DonorPerfect (fundraising software)
  • Assist with special events such as the, May and October fundraising events, etc.
  • File, copy, and help with administrative projects as needed
  • May attend/give presentations about SMGW at partners' and other locations (may be on the weekends)

Communications/Graphic Arts Intern

Provide assistance to the development director and to the communications and partner coordinator. Intern will assist with some combination of the following responsibilities depending on the skills and interests of the intern and the current needs of the organization.

  • Research, write and edit quarterly newsletter
  • Create flyers and promotional materials
  • Draft and send press releases
  • Assist with writing/editing copy for the website and keeping it up-to-date, and fresh
  • Create a social media plan to create awareness of Samaritan Ministry using our website, Twitter, and Facebook; Explore other on-line medium as well
  • Assist in formulating media plan for building awareness of organization and issues in which organization is involved
  • Work with printing companies on organization’s publications
  • Assist with creating displays, flyers, and other materials for participation in regional events
  • Provide general office support and respond to requests for information
  • Work with volunteer groups from local schools and churches
  • Develop educational and promotional materials for Help the Homeless mini walk program

This is a hands-on placement with great opportunities and skill building.

Skills required:

  • Writing skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Able to multi-task and work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with InDesign or Drupal and skills in layout and design desirable
  • Experience with social media
  • Passion for helping others
