Joe's Story

After returning from the Gulf War and serving his country, Joe, like so many other veterans in the District, found it difficult to find stable housing. Though he worked in construction, he didn’t make enough income to support himself.

Joe, 46, was temporarily living in an Arlington shelter when he found Samaritan Ministry. Within weeks, Joe’s caseworker was able to refer him to the Veterans Administration Comprehensive Work Training Program, and SMGW worked with him to determine the types of jobs that would best match his skills and experiences. Joe worked on his resume, attended appointments and interviews (outfitted in new clothing provided by SMGW), and ultimately landed a job as a custodian in a federal building.

Throughout the process, SMGW empowered and encouraged Joe to set goals and take the steps necessary to achieve those goals. He now has much more than a job—he has hope for the future.
