Samaritan’s Exciting Growth Expected to Continue in 2024

After a remarkable post-pandemic rebound last year, the growth in the number of DMV residents served by Samaritan Ministry is expected to keep accelerating through the end of 2024.

We are proud to share how your generosity empowers us to serve our neighbors in need: Next Step program statistics for 2023 are in now, and as you’ll see from the infographic below, Samaritan was able to assist 1,294 individuals overall, up from 565 in 2022. What’s more, 65% of 2023 participants were active ones, as compared to 52% during the prior year.

About 65% of the growth came from returning citizens who, after completing their sentences, are released into a changed world without so much as a state ID. “We’re with people for the journey,” Program Coordinator Jane Bishop says, and Samaritan can help with every step of building a productive and meaningful new life.

With a fully staffed Next Step program team comprising 10 members and under the leadership of new Program Director Julio Da Silva, alongside the steadfast guidance of Bishop, we anticipate the following outcomes in 2024:

  1. The number of Samaritan’s Adult Basic Education Students will double;
  • STRIVE employment readiness training graduates will increase from 9 to about 70;
  • The number of Participants served by our offices will rise by:

–  150% at the SE DC Anacostia office

–  100% at the NW DC office

–  70% at the Arlington office.

The DC Fiscal Policy Institute reported that the District’s overall poverty rate dropped slightly — to 13.3 percent from 16.5% — in 2022, the last year for which census data is available. But that means that more than one in seven residents still live in poverty, including one in six children, and more than one in five Black DC residents. And with municipal and state budgets tightening, their ability to receive crucial help from organizations like Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington will be all the more important.

Our donors and volunteers are critical to the empowerment that we offer our participants. If you’re one of them, we are grateful to you!
