Southeast for Southeast Volunteer Initiative

Every month across our five locations Samaritan Ministry hosts about 50 regular program volunteers as Front Office Coordinators (FOC), Computer Mentors and Resume Writers. We are fortunate to have three "on call" substitute volunteers for emergencies in our Northern Virginia and Northwest DC.

Unfortunately, we have no regular substitutes for our Anacostia/SE DC office. Gloria Ducker (FOC), Naima Harrison (Lead Caseworker), Sy Jones (Volunteer Manager), and others have been working together since March to launch a new initiative to strengthen the Anacostia/SE DC office.

On March 28th, Samaritan Ministry partnered with City Year to celebrate Student Service Week, an annual service-learning opportunity for high school students in the DMV area.

On April 6, more than a dozen participants and local community members joined James Perry, PrEP specialist with Family & Medical Counseling Service, at our Anacostia/SE DC office for a conversation about HIV/AIDS prevention, medical assistance, and local resources.

SMGW Receives 2018 Diana Davis Spencer Fellowship!

We are excited to share that Samaritan Ministry and our Executive Director, Rev. David B. Wolf, are recipients of a Diana Davis Spencer Fellowship for 2018. The Fellowship is a part of the Global Good Fund, an organization committed to investing in the leadership potential of social entrepreneurs in both the profit and not-for-profit sectors. The Fund supports such leaders over a 15-month period through assessment, coaching, and the crafting of a personal leadership development plan that includes addressing a significant entrepreneurial challenge. 

Remembering a Samaritan Saint: Dr. Tucker Battle (1938 – 2017)

Dr. Tucker Battle, a passionate SMGW Board leader and Partner Representative from St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, DC, died on December 28. In recent years, Tucker had been battling Parkinson’s disease, which precipitated him stepping off the SMGW Board of Directors three years ago, in January 2015. Tucker’s wife, Jane Battle, survives him as a passionate giver and SMGW leader.  

Twas the Season! Christmas Joy 2017

More than 800 gifts were given to participants and their families at last year's Christmas parties! Thank you for making our three parties a resounding success! Your generous support made it possible for more than three hundred fifty participants and their family members to experience Christmas joy at the Northern Virginia, Northwest and Southeast Washington parties. Thanks to all our volunteers, and our Partner Reps who recruited more than one hundred volunteers.

Sharing the Celebration: Christmas Parties!

More Service at Skyland

To be more accessible to new Next Step Participants, especially those taking the STRIVE job readiness training, we've expanded our Next Step Program services at the Skyland Workforce Center (SWC) and consolidated STRIVE trainings to this location by closing our office at the Perry School Center.
