New Hires for Summer 2019!

3 New and RETURNING Staff Join SMUG-WA...and Counting!

I share the exciting news with you that SMGW recently hired 3 “new” staff – or re-hires as the case may be – all of whom started in July!   The truly exciting news is that 2 of our 3 hires are current or former staff, and the 3rd is a graduate of our STRIVE job readiness training! They are...

  • Naima Harrison, who rejoins the staff as Lead Caseworker in the SE DC – Anacostia office, after a 7-month hiatus during which she was doing contract work on behalf of immigrant children as well as contract work for us while we searched for her successor . . . until she decided to return!  We are so pleased to have her back . . . and so glad we didn’t fill the position in the meantime!   Naima returned on a full-time basis on Sat., July 13, assisting with “Christmas in July” and voter registration at the Anacostia office!
  • Sophia Nalty, who will continue on staff at the conclusion of her year as a Discipleship Year Intern Caseworker.  Effective August 1, Sophia will serve as the full-time Employment Caseworker in our SE DC location @ the Skyland Workforce Center (SWC) as part of the STRIVE team.  Sophia has done a fantastic job in her role as an Intern Caseworker this year, serving the NW office as well as on the STRIVE team in the SWC office for almost 4 months.  It was based on that very good work that we extended an offer to her to stay on board, an invitation that doesn’t happen with every Intern Caseworker.  Sophia, we’re all so excited you’re staying on in this FT permanent capacity.
  • Shangti Petty (pronounced “SHAN-tee”) After going through the full application and interview process, Shangti joins us as the STRIVE Retention Specialist serving the STRIVE team on a part-time basis at our location at the SWC in SE DC.  She is a recent STRIVE graduate who distinguished herself as a participant in one of our recent STRIVE workforce training cohorts.  Her position entails following up with recent graduates to see how they are doing and collaborating with others on the team to ensure that graduates are receiving the support they need to retain the position or seek a new one. Shangti began her work with us on Thurs., July 11.

I add my great thanks to everyone – full-time and part time staff – who have held our ship together in this difficult transitional time, especially in the SE DC Anacostia and SWC locations. And please join me in giving a warm welcome and congratulations to our new and returning staff!

I hasten to add that you can meet our new staff at the July 24 SMUG-WA Happy Hour @ Busboys & Poets on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue on July 24, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  To RSVP e-mail David, dwolf@samaritanministry.org or Sy Jones, sjones@samaritanministry.org

I further hasten to add that we still are in search for three other positions:  Job Developer, Community Outreach Specialist and Development Director.  All 3 positions are posted on Idealist and Zip Recruiter, among other locations – but also can be found on our website via this link
